LONDON, March 20 (Reuters) - Pfizer, the world's biggest pharmaceutical firm, has halted operations due to a lack of a licence to sell its erectile dysfunction drug Viagra. The move will have a positive impact on the company's future earnings, which are up about 2 percent this year, and its stock has fallen by 2.6 percent to £58.40.
The move comes as Pfizer has faced a series of setbacks in recent years, with the company's patent expiries, which were down by more than half to £8.5 billion, down 1.6 percent.
Pfizer had previously announced plans to sell its erectile dysfunction drug to the European Union for a total of £20 billion in April, but it has since stopped its efforts and is now facing more generic competition for the product. Viagra was first approved in the United States in 1998. It became available in Europe in 1999 after being approved in the UK in 2003. Pfizer's licence was extended to cover all of Europe in 2005.
