LONDON, March 20 (Reuters) - Pfizer, the world's biggest pharmaceutical firm, has halted operations due to a lack of a licence to sell its erectile dysfunction drug Viagra. The move will have a positive impact on the company's future earnings, which are up about 2 percent this year, and its stock has fallen by 2.6 percent to £58.40.
The move comes as Pfizer has faced a series of setbacks in recent years, with the company's patent expiries, which were down by more than half to £8.5 billion, down 1.6 percent.
Pfizer had previously announced plans to sell its erectile dysfunction drug to the European Union for a total of £20 billion in April, but it has since stopped its efforts and is now facing more generic competition for the product. The move comes as Pfizer has faced setbacks in recent years, with the company's patent expiries, which were down by 1.2 percent, and its stock has fallen by 2.2 percent to £58.40.
Pfizer said on Wednesday it had halted operations in the UK because of a lack of a license to sell the erectile dysfunction drug and had been unable to get a licence in the US. Pfizer's patent exclusivity was due to expire in the fall of 2010, but will only expire in September.
Shares of the British drugmaker fell 1.8 percent to £33.88 at one of the world's largest trading sessions, up about 2 percent. The stock has lost a share of the UK's stock market after its shares fell 2 percent this week.
The company also announced a new and much-needed license for Viagra, the first drug that the company has approved for use in the UK.
"The licence is very much in line with our current plans to offer an alternative to Viagra for erectile dysfunction treatment in the US," said Andrew Witty, Pfizer chairman and chief executive. "We will continue to follow the example of other pharmaceutical companies and will not hesitate to seek the help of the US regulatory bodies in the process."
Viagra was first approved in the United States in 1998. It became available in Europe in 1999 after being approved in the UK in 2003. Pfizer's licence was extended to cover all of Europe in 2005.
Viagra has been in use for more than two decades but the drug has been plagued by problems of its side effects, particularly heart problems. Pfizer has faced a number of setbacks in recent years, including problems related to the effects of the drug on the liver.
The move came after the company announced that it was to lose its patent on its drug for erectile dysfunction.
A report by The Sun in early September said Pfizer had suspended the sale of Viagra, which had been available for several years.
Pfizer said the announcement was "respectful and not a reflection on Pfizer's current performance," and that it was "continuing to review our current regulatory standards and procedures and develop a new product that addresses the needs of patients with erectile dysfunction."
The report said that Pfizer had agreed to keep Viagra on the market until late 2009 and had made three new drugs on the market. It added that Pfizer had also paid for the development of a generic version of Viagra, which Pfizer has previously launched for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension.
Pfizer has said it will seek approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its generic version of Viagra, which it plans to launch in the next four years, but it has not made any progress on its patent.
Pfizer said the company had launched a new drug for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in 2002 and in 2003 Viagra was approved for the treatment of impotence. The company's patent for the drug expired in 2006, but it has been able to develop and market its own version of the drug.
The company has also been looking for ways to increase its earnings, and it is now looking for ways to make the sales of the drug lessening, and to pay for more expensive marketing expenses.
Viagra has become an attractive target for analysts due to the drug's potential to boost profits and reduce costs. Pfizer has also raised the prices of its generic versions of the drug.
"Our results have been mixed," said Erik Gordon, an analyst at Watsons Investment Research in London. He said that Pfizer had not seen an increase in sales in the first nine months of last year.
